Each solitaire mahjong tile layout will require a unique approach. However, the general strategy is to keep removing tiles in such a way that each removal opens up more possibilities for future matching. Choosing obvious matching tiles each time, such as those from the top levels, will often end up in a lost game by leaving essential mahjong tiles blocked.

React fast. Time is the most important factor in the game so it is imperative to be quick. Fast reaction means making the correct decision given the current situation based on the result of previous decisions.

Good strategy will have the player visualizing moves several steps ahead. The game may look immediately playable, but if future moves are not considered, the wrong choice may be made which would make a winnable mahjong game impossible.

Visual memory is key. Some MahJong characters look quite similar, especially when quickly scanning many tiles at once. It is important to be able to distinguish all of the mahjong tiles correctly and often memorize where "that piece" was.

Remember -

• There are usually more than two matching sets of each mahjong tile. When removing a pair, triplet, etc., an identical set may still exist in the layout. Would it be trapped by the removal of the first set?


• Concentrate efforts on long rows and tall stacks.


• Plan ahead as many moves as possible.


• If all instances of a mahjong tile are available, remove them all to unclutter the board.


• Identify as many matching sets as possible. Check for mahjong tiles that need to be unblocked.


• Choose carefully which mahjong tiles are to be removed. For example, when the game rules are set to match two, beware of three free matching tiles. Choose carefully which two of the three are to be removed. Leave the one that is blocking the least important mahjong tiles.


• Concentrate on removing pairs, triplets, etc., that will unblock the most mahjong tiles.
